All pens I sell are ready to be inked and used immediately. How do I use this pen? This pen is a lever-filler, meaning that the filling mechanism is operated by a lever set into the barrel. When the lever is raised, a pressure bar inside the pen squeezes a rubber inkwell called a sac. To fill the pen, dip the tip of the pen into a container of ink, pull and then release the lever, and ink will be drawn into the sac. What’s this pen made out of? This pen is made of hard rubber with a sterling silver overlay. Why collectors love hard rubber. Hard rubber is one of the earliest materials used for mass produced fountain pens, dating all the way back to the 1850s. Owning a hard rubber pen is owning a functioning piece of history! Hard rubber is also surprisingly durable, roughly similar to plastics. It has a very nice weight to it, providing a balanced feel and relative to its size. Hard rubber is available in a wide variety of colors. Early pens came in either black, or red mottled (black with flecks and streaks of red) hard rubber. Later varieties also included a wide range of “ripple” colors, as well as cardinal red, and wood grain. How do I maintain this pen? Hard rubber is very simple to care for, just be sure to avoid two things: intense sunlight, and water. Small amounts of water around the section and nib when cleaning the pen is perfectly fine, but prolonged, direct exposure to water or sunlight can cause oxidation, which results in discoloration. It won’t damage the pen, but most collectors agree that too much oxidation looks bad and affects value. The sterling silver overlay can be treated like any other silver jewelry. If you intend to polish it, please use a polish designed specifically for fountain pens. Model History and information. This is a Waterman 452 in smooth hard rubber with a sterling silver overlay. The first number (4xx) indicates the silver overlay. The second number (x5x) indicates the model number. The final number (xx2) is the nib size. This pen was made around 1920. I also offer free repairs or adjustments on any pen if you find any problems or defects upon receipt.
