FABULOUS RARE VICTORIAN CARVED LETTER OPENER/DIP PEN/WAFER DESK SEAL/STANHOPE. This is an Extremely Rare Victorian Hand Carved Letter Opener-Dip Pen -Wafer Desk Seal with a Stanhope of Bradford, this would have been crafted circa 1890 making nearly 130 years old, it would have been made by a fabulous Victorian Craftsman as the quality is stunning, i will try to describe as best i can , the letter opener has been crafted with a smooth finish allowing it to slide under the paper with ease and so to open the letter, the handle itself is breath taking, the work that has gone into the carving and crafting of this is stunning, half way up the handle it unscrews to reveal the most wonderful Victorian dip pen which has a wonderful cold colour mount, it needs a new nib as this one has long gone, these are very easy to replace, the handle has open pierced decoration, engraved and carved circles and turned banding, as you near the top you will see a wonderful ball finial which in turn contains the STANHOPE, the six images of bradford, i will name them from top left to right then down, The town hall… 9 inches -23 cm length. Lovely condition with just the normal amount of surface wear with some old hairlines, just mentioned for accuracy. When we think of the romance of Regency letters, we think of sealing wax. Using it seems like a ritual that brings past times before our senses: the flickering candle, the smell of melting wax. Two alternative ways of sealing letters in one breath: wax or wafer. I was astonished to learn how ubiquitous sealing wafers once were, and how nearly forgotten they are now! Enticks dictionary of 1791 gives three basic definitions, focus on is the last wafer in Enticks entry: paste made to close letters. This was sometimes called the common wafer to distinguish it from fancier variants. The common wafer was very simple: a thin disk of dry paste that becomes sticky when wet. How wafers were made gives us a sense of their properties. Recipes for making wafers at home are readily available in the many receipt-books that borrowed or pirated? Heres one from the New Family Receipt Book of 1811. Take very fine flour, mix it with the glair (or whites of eggs) isinglass, and a little yeast; mingle the materials, beat them well together, spread the batter, being made thin with gum water, on even tin plates, and dry them in a stove; then cut them for use. You may make them of what colour you please. Once I knew what to look for, I found wafers on many letters from Jane Austens era- on letters Jane wrote, no less! Even if youre looking at images online that dont show the whole letter in detail, the perfectly round shadow of a sealing wafer is often very distinctive- even expert sealing-wax users rarely make a perfect circle of wax. Another thing to look for is the tell-tale mark of the wafer seal. While the wafer was still moist, a cross-hatched tool was often pressed into the paper to help it bite into the softened paste. LIVING IN SOUTH LOUISIANA MY ENTIRE LIFE, I HAVE SINUS ISSUES AND NO SENSE OF SMELL!! I love this set!!! Lovely repousse work on both pieces, they are both marked sterling. The nib is marked M SMITH & CO NEW YORK, and I believe it is gold. Both pieces have heavy patina, and I have resisted the urge to polish!! The pen measures 7 long, the hook is a little over 4 1/2 including the ring at the end. The case is in remarkably good condition, the velvet is still plush. Thee is some light writing, I think in pencil, on the inside of the lid. I really cant make out much of what is written. This is truly a fabulous set, box and all! This would be a super addition to any pen collection!!! We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as “gifts” – US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior. Our home is smoke and pet free, but a lot of our items come from estate sales, and we don’t know what the conditions were in the homes.
