The pen comes with its original box. The pen is in near mint/excellent condition. The ink cartridge has dry up. I don’t see any scratches, cracks, or teeth marks int the plastic barrel. The sterling silver has a nice blackish patina on it, but it can be polished to look like new. Craig Sheaffer, second president of Sheaffer Pen Company had a love affair with sterling overlay fountain pens. Having patented the “balance” design fountain pen he had his R & D people make a series of 4 sterling silver jackets to fit over a standard black pen. These would be prototype prototypes. The design and application are a bit more crude than would have been allowed from the R & D department on a true prototype. There were four variations done. The one here is a quarteracket with an engraved pattern. There is no sac, feed or nib on this pen. Nor has there ever been. It was never intended to write with. IF the new owner wished to write with it, a feed and nib and sac would be a simple matter. Also, it should be taken to a jeweler experienced in such work to have the jackets permanently attached and the edges finished smooth. This is a rare, rare pen. Only four were made and they were all different so this is one of one. After some time, Mr. Sheaffer gave the lot of four pens to his secretary who in turn gave them to his daughter in law who ran an antique shop. He passed away in the 1990’s. I bought the entire Sheaffer part of his collection second hand from his estate. I have owned these pens for thirty years and NEVER offered this one for sale. I did sell two of the examples a while ago. If you truly wish to own a one of a kind pen this is your chance.
