In accordance with the Romanov tradition, this piece was presented to Empress Maria Fedorovna in 1887 by her husband, Tsar Alexander III. Consuelo Venderbilt, the Duchess of Marlborough saw the Imperial Blue Serpent Clock Egg on a visit to Russia and was stricken by its beauty. Shortly thereafter, Faberge was commissioned to recreate the design, which was completed in 1902, this time in Pink, bearing her initials. The Pink Serpent pen takes its inspiration from this historical Faberge Egg, the only one made for an American.
