Extremely Rare Fine Quality Georgian Gout Stool Novelty Pen Wipe (one Off)

EXTREMELY RARE FINE QUALITY GEORGIAN GOUT STOOL NOVELTY PEN WIPE. This is an Extremely Rare Fine Quality Georgian Novelty Pen Wipe in the Form of a Gout Stool, this was crafted circa 1800 making it 218 years old. This rare Gout Stool Pen Wipe is stunning, it has been crafted in the form of a Georgian Gout Stool, the detailing is breath taking, this has a raised curved back support angled to support a foot suffering from the painful “rich man’s” ailment. As you can see its beautiful from it’s deep blue covering for use in wiping your dip pen, to the centre is an intricately designed embroidered oval panel and elegant brocades to both curved edges, the sides and base as you can see have been crafted in a beautiful brown tooled leather with scroll work to the sides and a delicate tooled stripe to the front, on turning it over you will see it still retains its original deep red leather covering, this then stands on 4 gold gilt ball feet, its amazing it has survived in such wonderful condition, this isn’t flimsy but of a good weight and quality, it has wear as you would expect with a little brocade missing near the top and wear to the centre panel, but overall in wonderful original condition, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb. T his would have once belonged to a wealthy Georgian gentleman and sat pride of place on his writing desk and used daily to wipe the excess ink from his dip pen, this was in a time many years ago when letter writing was the only form of communication, if this could talk i bet it would have some fascinating stories to tell, It is so very tactile and once picked up has the most wonderful feel, this is an extremely rare form of Georgian pen wipe and you wont find another like this on the market, its breath taking. This will add something very special to any collection my photos dont do it justice. These wonderful elaborate gout stools would have been the treasure of the most fortunate, as Gout was a painful problem in the 18th and 19th century. We now know that it is caused by a build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints leading to inflammation and swelling and severe pain. It used to be thought a result of drinking too much port. Certainly heavy consumption of red meats and offal and alcohol are implicated, and that fits the diet of most well-off Georgian males! Nearly 6 cm across… Just over 4.5 depth…. Nearly 4 cm height.
