Antiques, Fine Art & Collectibles. Antique English Sterling Silver Inkwell Pen Stand 1901 Horse Hoof Hallmarked. DESCRIPTION Antique equestrian and sterling silver piece of Victoriana. This English mounted horse hoof inkwell and pen rest is a beautiful and rare decorative arts piece. The horses name “Silver Bell” and his death date “1901” is engraved in the sterling silver hinged lid. The top opens to reveal a frosted glass and sterling silver rimmed inkwell. The underside of the hoof is encased in sterling silver in the form of a horse shoe which like all silver pieces is individually hallmarked. There are two individual sterling pen rests on top of the inkwell horse hoof. Engraved: Silver Bell 1901 Hallmarked: H W & Co Ltd (makers mark Horace Woodward & Co Ltd) Lion Passant(sterling silver mark) Leopards head (London assay city mark) g (year mark 1902) It must be assumed that this horse was held in high esteem by his owners to have part of this beloved animal mounted in sterling silver and memorialized in death. Tastefully done by a prestigious silver smith firm right at the end of the Victorian era. MEASUREMENTS Item measures 7 deep by 4 wide by 6 tall and weighs 1lb 8.6oz. CONDITION In good condition with some signs of use commensurate with age, (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
